Two weeks ago, when Stuart Scott passed away, the world lost one of its most enthusiastic sports fans. Scott, a sports broadcaster for ESPN, was required by his job to remain neutral and not cheer for any one team over another, so he cheered for them all. If anyone ever truly loved his job, it was Stuart Scott. His passion and enthusiasm jumped through the television when he used such memorable phrases as “Boo-Yah,” and “As cool as the other side of the pillow.” And of course who could forget, “Just call him butter, ’cause he’s on a roll?” Scott loved sports and being a sports reporter. Even those of us who didn’t know him personally could tell.
I heard some people calling into a sports radio talk show station shortly after Stuart Scott’s passing. A few callers described chance meetings with Scott when they bumped into him at sporting events or out in public. Each of the callers talked about how they introduced themselves to Scott and then proceeded to say how pleasant and friendly he was to them. Unlike some celebrities, Scott never took his viewers for granted and always had time to thank them for watching.
In the past two weeks, I’ve heard Stuart Scott described as creative, innovative, passionate, enthusiastic, fun, kind, considerate, strong, tough, and unique. These seem to be qualities that make a great sports broadcaster. Coincidentally, these are also the characteristics of many great leaders. So, this week, let’s try to bring a little more Stuart Scott to our leadership. Let’s be a little more enthusiastic, a little more creative, and a little more kind to others. In memory of Stuart Scott, we’ll call it “Boo-Yah Leadership!”
About 6 months ago, Stuart Scott was honored with the Jimmy V Award, named in memory of Jim Valvano who also fought a courageous battle against cancer. In his acceptance speech, Scott said, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” Stuart Scott did not lose. He won. He won by living a life of passion, fun, and kindness. So pause this week to make sure you are living life to the fullest and leading to your fullest potential. I want to see a little more Boo-Yah leadership this week. And of course, stay cool…..”as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
