Don’t Just Manage, Lead

Author and speaker Simon Sinek once wrote, “There are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or authority, but those who lead inspire us….We follow those who lead, not because we have to, but because we want to.”

I have often used a similar distinction to differentiate managers and leaders. Managers have position power, granted to them by the authority or “rank” of the position they  hold. Leaders, however, have personal power; their power comes from their ability to motivate, unite, and inspire others.

Does your team follow you because they want to? Or do they follow you because they have no choice? Be a leader who inspires others. Be encouraging and positive. Be hopeful and caring. Don’t settle on being an effective manager. Be an inspiring leader who others follow because they want to!
