Disney Magic Through RAVE and ARE

As promised last week, I am going to use a series of posts to share some wisdom from Creating Magic, the book written by former Disney executive Lee Cockerell.  Last week we shared Disney’s formula for success that is based on leaders creating a culture of care.

This week, we will talk about an important leadership philosophy Cockerell calls RAVE – Respect. Appreciate. Value. Everyone. When introducing RAVE, Cockerell writes, “…despite the amazing variety of human beings out there, all everyone wants is to feel special, to be treated with respect, and to be seen as an individual.”

Similarly, Cockerell and Disney leaders practiced ARE – Appreciation, Recognition, Encouragement. He believes that together, appreciation, recognition, and encouragement “make up a cost-free, fully sustainable fuel, one that builds self-confidence and self-esteem, boosts individual and team performance, and keeps an organization running cleanly and smoothly.”

Given Disney’s success, it seems like trying RAVE and ARE with our teams sure could be worth it. So this week, elevate the level of Respect, Appreciation, Recognition, and Encouragement in your organization. Model these behaviors for your team and you’ll see them start to spread and to become part of your culture. Then you are on your way to creating magic with your team!
